Year 1 of the Rolling Programme
Autumn Term - INVENTORS AND INVENTIONS
Inventors and Inventions
During this topic the children will look at a number of influential inventors and their inventions. Although this study is not restricted to the Victorian period, this is the era we will be concentrating on the most.
The children will write a brief biographyies of the influential inventors of the time and look into the inventions of Alexander Graham Bell, Robert Stevenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel as well as studying Queen Victoria herself.
As well as the work in school, the children have the opportunity to participate in a residential trip to Telford, a town named after the influential Thomas Telford. Details about this trip have been sent out to all parents who have children in year 5 and 6.
The children will be encouraged to undertake an independent project. This project is to be done in school and at home and allows the children to choose a particular aspect of the topic to research further. The children will be looking at the History of the British Monarchy.
Spring Term - THE LIVING RAINFOREST
Throughout this topic the children will get the opportunity to develop a number of their skills. They will be able to select appropriate materials for their art and DT topics, look closely at geographical aspects of the rainforests and compose pieces of music.
The science sessions the children will receive will enable them to develop a number of their investigational skills. They will record observations, take measurements and drw conclusions using scientific vocabulary.
In literacy the children will be focusing heavily on improving their writing. In particular we will be focusing on writing for a specific audience, using more advanced punctuation accurately and using a variety of sentence openers.
As well as continuing to develop their number skills through problem solving, in numeracy the children will look at data and learn how to describe the mean, median and mode of data as well as the range. The children will construct bar and line graphs and learn how to interpret pie charts accurately
In ICT the children will be introdued to Studywiz / Wizkid, a learning pltatform used by most Hampshire schools. This is an Internet based program that will allow the children to access work from home. More details will be sent out shortly.
This half term will also incorporate a trip to Wyld Court, a living rainforest in Newbury. Separate letters will be sent out closer to the time of the trip.
Summer Term First Half - STREETWISE!
During this project the children will look at graffiti as an art form and experiment with using different styles to write their own name. A graffiti artist will be coming in to school to work with the children and teach them about graffiti. This will give the children an excellent first hand experience.
The children will also look into the work of Andy Worhol, and create pieces of art in the style of this artist.
The children will look at a variety of poems and stories and meet Krindlekrax, a sewer monster! Science work will be based on water flow and create their own rap in music.
The children will begin a new independent project for this half term. This will be a project of their choice linked to their current topic. This will look slightly different in each class so please talk to your children about their particular independent project.
Summer Term Second Half - SHAKESPEARE
During this topic the children will be able to experience a variety of things Shakespeare related. The children will undertake a variety of design technology topics such as creating their own theatres, some resembling the famous Globe Theatre in London.
The children will become increasingly involved in designing a curriculum to suit them during this project. They will plan some of the activities they do in literacy. Many have chosen to either create a biography of Shakespeare or write modern versions of his plays. A number of children have chosen to use ICT to support this.
The children will also be going on a trip to the Globe Theatre in London. This will give them the opportunity to practice some Shakespeare and see the Globe itself.
Year 2 of Rolling Programme
Autumn First Half – Life is a Rollercoaster!
This unit is based around rollercoasters! The children will be looking at the possibility of using the old infant building as a site for a brand new theme park. The children will be writing their arguments for and against this, which will culminate in a debate.
The children will be going on a residential trip to Derbyshire. During this time they will go to Alton Towers to experience rollercoasters first hand and to watch their teachers faces as they attempt to remain calm on rides!
In numeracy we will be focusing on improving the children’s problem solving skills. It seems simple, however the children will be encouraged to read the question carefully and be taught checking strategies to improve the accuracy of their answers.
The children will be working on problem solving in numeracy. They will be helped in developing their strategies and refining their mental maths skills.
Autumn Second Half – It’s a Myth….Tery!
This unit focuses on the Ancient Greeks, with some comparison between them and the modern Greece. The children will look at Greek food and create their own dish based around a Greek Salad.
The children will be creating Greek Men in their Art sessions, putting them into poses ready for the Olympics!
In literacy we will be working on journalistic writing. The children will be working on improving their sentence structure, ensuring that they are competent in writing simple, compound and complex sentences as well as varying the way they start their sentences.
In numeracy we will continue to focus on improving the children’s problem solving skills. It seems simple, however the children will be encouraged to read the question carefully and be taught checking strategies to improve the accuracy of their answers.
We also have a number of exciting things coming up this half term, such as the Royal visit, where the children will be doing research into the Royal Family.
Spring Term 1 - Earth and Beyond
During this half term the children will learn about space, the stars and the planets and the children will begin to understand the 'layering' process of their address.
Our literacy work links in with this topic as we will be reading and writing biographies and autobiographies of famous astronomers and astronaut as well as writing stories and poems inspired by the Earth and Beyond topic.
As well as continuing to develop the children problem solving strategies, focusing particular on reading and interpreting the questions, the children will be calculating various distances and scales to do with planets.
In ICT we will be looking at spreadsheets and getting the children to create a spreadsheet about the solar system. This will allow the children to sort planets by size, distance from the sun, orbits and temperature.
Spring Term Two - The Ancient Egyptians
During this half term the children will undertake a personal study based on the Ancient Egyptians. They will be given a prompt in the form of a brainstorm and can use numerous resources both from school and at home to complete their project. A copy of the prompt can be viewed by clicking here.
Throughout the half term the children will be refining their strategies for working in the four operations, developing their editing strateiges in literacy and in science they will be working on a Keeping Healthy unit of work.
In ICT the children will be practicing their Computer Control skills and creating a mini project that will be used by the younger children. They will need to think about their audience as well as presentation and accuracy.
We wil also be going on a trip to Highclere Castle and will receive a visit from children's author Val Wilding.
Summer One - Read All About It
This half term's topic is centred around newspapers and the media associated with it. The children will be looking at newspaper reports in literacy and use these reports to form part of their class newspaper. The children will also be writing play scripts to use when creating their own news show.
The children will use their ICT skills to help produce their newspaper, using office packages to work on the outline and digi blue software and hardware to film and edit their news show.
In numeracy the children will be continuing to develop their mental calculation straties as well as the checking strategies.
The children will be receiving a visit from a newspaper reporter as well as participating in our annual bike ride.
